The Perricone Weight-loss Diet: A Simple 3-part Program To Lose The Fat, The Wrinkles, And The Years

Nicholas Perricone

Ballantine Books, 2005-09-20

Price: $25.95

In The Perricone Weight-loss Diet, the father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging reveals the role of internal micro-inflammations, caused mainly by additive-packed foods and a sedentary lifestyle, not only in accelerated aging, but also in unwanted weight gain. The good news he shares is: it is possible to slow down the clock, clear the skin, and shed the pounds by following a diet of whole foods and natural supplements, and by progressively adopting an "anti-inflammatory lifestyle", including quality sleep and stress-reducing activities (pet lovers will especially appreciate the passage on the healing power of pets.)

If Dr. Perricone’s division of high- versus low-glycemic index foods, and healthy (Omega-3-rich) versus unhealthy fats, doesn't especially sound like breakout news, he has to be credited for his uniquely convincing way of (re-) laying out these dietary principles, and for incorporating them into a global plan to achieve better health and weight loss. "Treat yourself well and the weight will come off," he suggests. And this anti-alarmist, anti-paternalistic, and confident delivery (he doesn't fear complimenting competitor Tammi Flynn on her sensible Three-Apple-a-Day Plan), paired with his stellar success record in the health field (The Perricone Prescription; The Perricone Promise), forces your attention.

Readers will dive effortlessly into the easy-flowing chapters, from "Breaking the Inflammation-Fat Connection" to "The 10 Top Food Groups for Permanent Weight Loss" (headed up with mouthwatering wild Alaskan salmon), to Perricone's signature threefold plan, which he promises will show dramatic results in as little as 14 days. Complete with a full 14-day meal plan, detailed nutritional information for each recipe, a seafood safety guide, and a supplement and organic food retailer guide, The Perricone Weight-loss Diet will naturally find its place on the eye-level shelf of your home library.-- Nathalie Farage

Fall Back into Smoother, Radiant Skin and a Slimmer Shape: Anti-Inflammatory Foods for a New You This Season

<< As the golden days of summer draw to a close, renewed demand of career, family, school and related activities accelerate the pace of life. How can we avoid stress-related weight gain, keep our skin radiant and youthful, maintain energy to fulfill all of our commitments and enjoy a sense of well being? The answer is as close as your next meal!

Avoid foods that are sugary and starchy (sugar, breads, pasta, desserts, snack foods, etc.). Foods made with sweeteners and/or flour are pro-inflammatory and cause spikes in our blood sugar and insulin levels. This will cause your body to store, rather than burn fat. They will also rob you of your youth, beauty, energy and mental acuity. These foods also cause a rise and then drop in serotonin, the ‘feel-good’ hormone, leaving you depressed.

Choose foods that are anti-inflammatory—foods that are high in anti-oxidants, nature’s anti-inflammatories, which include brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Also, foods high in anti-inflammatory omega 3 essential fatty acids, such as wild Alaskan salmon, (my favorite) and other cold water fish, including sardines, anchovies, herring, trout, halibut, as well as flax seed and walnuts. These foods will cause you to rapidly lose body fat, maintain muscle mass, give you mental and physical energy and keep your mood elevated. Just the ticket to handle the busy days of autumn—and ensure that we look our best, with energy to spare, as the holiday season approaches. >>--Nicholas V. Perricone, M.D

Reviews:

Oh come on.....
I wouldn't sink my money into this book simply on principal. I visited Dr. Perricone's website only to find that he sells rather expensive "Cosmeticuals"....pages and pages; hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth. And his books are fairly thinly disguised "plugs" for what he sells.

I reviewed the diet and found a fraction of the same good information I found on Dr. Weil's website and his 8 week health plan. Although I have to admit Dr. Weil also sells expensive supplements, his overall plan is a LOT cheaper, with a LOT less science based sales pitches; and a LOT more common sense. For the same reasons I don't like this book though, I don't purchase Weil's stuff either.

What it all boils down to is a change in a persons's perspective on their own health and you don't need a lot of money so much as a lot of hard work to do that. Having tried just about every diet under the sun, I have a well-honed talent for knowing salesmanship when I see it. I definitely see it here and I'm not falling for it. I hate that there are still people out there willing to cash in on the vulnerabilities of overweight people (like myself).

Kudos to Perricone for finding a way to make a lot of money and make a success of his business. I respect him for that. But I'm not going to join in filling his coffers.
Infomercial
I thought the book was good until I realized I was reading an infomercail for Perricone weight loss formula to the tune of $190.00 per month.
Something to think about
A lot of people including so-called medical doctors have made negative comments on this book. I would just like to say as a dental hygienist that inflammation plays a major role in our health wherever it is in your body, and whether you feel it or not.

There has been recent research that links the harmful bacteria in our mouths to several life threatening diseases like diabetes, stroke and heart disease just to name a few. This research has all come out in the last few years. It is ridiculous for people to say they don't believe something is real unless they can see or feel it. People do not see their gums inflammed like I do, and they may not "feel" it either. They also do not feel decay until it is usually so severe they need a root canal.

Just because you cannot visually see or feel it for yourself (like acne on your face), does not mean it is not happening inside our bodies. People have cancers growing inside their bodies that they cannot see or feel, yet that does not change the fact that they are still there.

We need to wake up and realize that our diet plays a major role in our health and that all these processed foods and refined sugars are damaging to our bodies as well as our teeth.

Low-glycemic index foods are good for us because our bodies digest them more slowly and they usually have more fiber and nutrients. Salmon has also been shown to be beneficial because of Omega-3's. This book is not a bad start. The people who have taken these ideas and modified them to fit their lifestyle and budget are the smart ones. There are similar supplements out there if you look. I have even heard the good Dr. state that you do not have to buy his supplements to get results.

If anyone is really interested in their health they should read Dr. Andrew Weil (8 Weeks to Optimum Health, Healthy Aging).
Thanks!!!
I was a little skeptical about buying this book because of all of the bad reviews. However, as I started to read, I became more convinced that I should give this program a try. However, I will modify the diet to fit my budget.

I find that almost all diets can be expensive but you can modify the diet to fit your budget. I will most likely purchase some of the supplements that Dr Perricone recommends; however, I will shop around for the best price. The same concept applies to the food.

I don't know if I can buy into the inflammation concept but I am not a doctor. But I do know that we have a problem with obesity in our country. In my lifetime, I have spent hundreds of $s to lose weight. Now, I am convinced that its not just about losing weight but maintaining a healthy lifestyle. That's why I think some of Dr. Perricons's theories are worth examining.
I don't know
There are many things that sound really good (calories restriction, proper food combination, the importance of omega-3 fatty acids, etc), but there are also things that did not sound convincing enough to me. Is the whole "inflammation theory" really proven? I almost felt that the author was willing to blame anything and everything on inflammation.

The other thing that made me rather uncomfortable was the "doctor's" terminology. I prefer much simpler language as in the books by health and longevity specialist Dr. M. Tombak ("Cure the Incurable", "Can We Live 150"). Overall, I think that Perricone's book is worth looking at, but it is up to you to decide whether you really want to buy it or just borrow it from the library.
