(The Fat Flush Plan)

The Fat Flush Plan

Ann Louise Gittleman, Barry Sears

McGraw-Hill, 2001-12-06

Price: $21.95

The keys to overweight are liver toxicity, waterlogged tissues, fear of eating fat, excess insulin, and stress, asserts nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman. Her Fat Flush Plan addresses these problems with a targeted diet.

The Fat Flush Plan, filled with nutritional analysis and detailed explanations, is not a quick read. Despite Gittleman's assertion that the plan is "as easy as 1-2-3," it is quite regimented. No white flour, white sugar, margarine, vegetable shortening, artificial sweeteners, or caffeine. The diet emphasizes essential oils (e.g., flaxseed and GLA), protein (eight ounces or more, plus two eggs a day), vegetables, thermogenic spices (e.g., ginger and cayenne), water, and diuretic beverages (eight glasses/day of diluted, unsweetened cranberry juice). In its first two-week phase, the plan is a rigid, low calorie (1,100-1,200 calories/day), low-carb (no grains or starchy vegetables) diet. Phase two lets you increase your calories to 1,500 and add two "friendly carbs." Phase three, the "lifestyle program," moderately adds more dairy, carbs, and calories. Gittleman promotes walking and recommends strength training in phase three.

The book includes 41 recipes such as Grilled Lamb Chops with Cinnamon and Coriander, Breakfast Egg Fu Yung, and Cumin Sautéed Scallops. The Fat Flush Plan is recommended for dieters willing to commit to a strict plan for weight loss. --Joan Price

Reviews:

Make the commitment

The book is written in an easy-to-follow format, and best of all, the plan makes sense. The science is thoughtful and sound, the instructions clear and the quality of your life and the shape of your body can be your reward. I had decided to give the plan two weeks and have ended up incorporating it permanently. I'm not overweight, but this book is more about improving your overall health, digestion, and the effectiveness of your body's functions. Weight loss is just a natural response to the positive changes you make following The Fat Flush Plan. It will help you adopt healthy eating habits. I think this is an important book for people to read because of the health information even if they don't need to lose weight/fat. However, since this book is at times limited in its contents I suggest supplementing it with more informative "Can We Live 150" by Dr. M. Tombak. Dr. Tombak's philosophy well fits the Fat Flush Plan, while at the same time it will extend your healthy lifestyle by some important factors outside of nutrition (body cleansing, proper breathing, etc.) Many excerpts from the book can be found at the author's internet site. You owe yourself the honor of making the commitment to read these books and take action!
Complicated at first...but worth it!!! I lost 50 lbs in 2 months!!!
I started the plan 2 months ago after watching two of my friends loose weight and transform their lives on the Fat Flush Plan. I had to read the book 3 times before jumping off the cliff to become a healthier me. I found the text to be complicated to understand...having mentors helped a lot. I recommend going to the FAT FLUSH website and buying the start up kit from her (cheaper than Whole Foods) and finding someone whom has done the plan go shopping the first time with you. Unlike my friends whom had 10-30 lbs to loose, I am (or was) morbid obese. I've got a long way to go....but, 50 lbs in 2 months.....Woah!....I feel great! Went from a size 26 to size 18 in 2 months and the pounds & inches are still melting away. Did I mention my skin....clear and soft as a babys bottom. I may be heavy....but I no longer have cellulite on thia body. Great side effect....don't you think!!!
THANK YOU Louise Gettleman, you are my hero!
Lose Weight and Feel Great
I have this book, the Fast Track Detox, and others by ALG. The Fat Flush Plan is really not a diet but a way of living and eating. As one of the other reviewers noted, it is not for everyone. However, if you're ready to discipline yourself, and make some life/eating style changes following the FFP can make a big difference whether you're looking to lose 10lbs, 80lbs or just cleanse your body. I've lost 30lbs following the plan. Get it you'll be so glad you did!
Fat Flush Plan by Gittleman
The medical and nutritional advice in this book is sound. The importance of liver detoxification is a classic part of the alternative medicinal regimen. Generally, the liver burns fat, acts as a metabolizer and detoxifies the blood of waste materials.

Overloading the liver results in weight gain, cellulite, bloat,
increased blood pressure and fatigue. Liver stressers are caffeine, sugar, medications and emotional stress.

The standard flush consists of a mixture of Cran juice and water,
psyllium and/or flaxseed. This produces a potent phytonutrient
mix which is rich in antioxidants which provide classic cofactors for optimal liver functioning. In addition, the combo helps to digest fatty globules in the lymphatic system. The cocktail
discharges fat generally. Eggs help to regulate bile.
Broccoli and kale are sulforaphranes which convert toxins to
non-toxic materials. Ginger root is known to increase metabolism.
Lipotropic herbs are dandelion root and milk thistle. Milk thistle is a classic producer of liver enzymes which helps to repair damaged tissues.

Certain foods trigger destructive activity in the immune system.
i.e. dairy, wheat, sugar and yeast which together account for
approximately 80% of food reactions. B complex prevents fat buildup. Candidiasis yeast overgrowth occurs. To counter this
overgrowth, the body needs essential fatty acids (Omega 3),
vitamins and amino acids. Decreased cortisol levels increase stress.

In the first phase of the detox program, subjects drink 64 ou. of cran and water and 48 ou. of plain water in a later phase.
The Long Life Cocktail consists of diluted cran and flaxseed or
psyllium. The classic fat flush would have us avoid coffee,
alcohol and sugar. The dietary regimen described should be enhanced with daily exercise.

The presentation has a considerable following in the alternative medicinal community , as well as adherents to complementary medicinal approachs. The program should be coordinated with a professional nutritionist and applicable medical providers.
