Body for Life for Women: A Woman's Plan for Physical and Mental Transformation

Pam Peeke

Rodale Books, 2005-04-16

Price: $26.95

It's not all about the jeans; flattening the tummy helps fight "Toxic Fat"--the disease-inducing weight Dr. Pamela Peeke teaches women how to conquer in Body-for-LIFE for Women. Her firm belief is, most women already know what they're supposed to do: eat a balanced diet, ditch junk food, exercise, think positively. Peeke strives to show her "girlfriends" how to accomplish these tasks, customizing plans for young and old. Clients' stories (including a 95-year-old who worked herself out of a wheelchair and into a martial arts class, and a 14-year old who replaced 90 lbs. of fat with a healthy load of self-confidence) lend credence to Peeke's 12-week weight reduction plan; so do the wowsie before-and-after pictures. Gender-specific scientific evidence supports Peeke's premise that women's bodies require different care than men's. But she doesn't stop there.

Amazon.com Interview
Read our interview with Pam Peeke.
Peeke digs deeper for her audience, defining four hormonal milestones of a woman's life (menarche to beyond menopause) and customizing a physical and mental transformation plan to suit each. Easing off on strict calorie and weight guidelines, she focuses instead on serious fat reduction, muscle improvement, and practical suggestions for self-care. A handful of charts and formulae help readers assess their progress; sample exercises and fitness logs help, too. But for Peeke, weight reduction pales to bolstering a woman's self-worth through nurturing healthier habits. The only rough pill to swallow is Peeke's two-page list of smart foods: it lacks suggestions for turning acceptable proteins, carbohydrates and fats into palatable daily meals.--Liane Thomas

Set for success

Will "Body for Life for Women" be as successful as the original "Body for Life" by Bill Philips? At the moment we don't know, but there are a few aspects of the book that put it on a good path to a great success.

First of all I like the author's holistic approach. It is pointless to try to win the weight loss game without understanding how our minds, our feelings, our thoughts, and our daily life all affect our bodies. The Mind-Mouth-Muscle template is a great thing. It not only helps you to loose weight (or "remove it," as the author names it) but at the same time, to increase your energy and stress resilience while being satisfied with your healthy life.

Ms. Peeke does not offer any of the fad diets. I like the fact that she offers "smart fats, carbs and proteins". She is short on providing good, tasty recipes but it is understandable. You cannot be a physician, nutritionist, a workout specialist, and a chef at the same time... Dr. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150 Year?" (I highly recommend this book to everone!) is also short on this subject, but similar as Dr. Peeke, he provides the ground rules for healthy life style that bring about great results: what and how to eat, breathe, sleep, exercise, think, and much more... Once you understand the rules, and follow them the results are just a natural outcome of the new life style that you adopt. There is really no need for "cooking instructions".
I Want To Die Very Young At A Very Old Age
In June 2005 I walked into a bookstore and happened to notice the book "Body For Life". I looked it over and thought "what the heck, I've tried everything else". The information in this book is transforming my life. It has given me the knowledge to understand the changes my body has and is going through thus making all the difference to my mental as well as my physical well-being. This book has finally taught me 'mind over matter'. I am 51, 5'7" and in just 12 short weeks, I have gone from 190.5 pounds to 169.5 lbs., removed 21 inches, gone from a size 16 to 12 and feel wonderful. And, I did it 'my way'. No diets, no pills, this is a commitment to a healthy way of life. Halfway to my goal, I urge everyone to get this book. If it weren't for "Body For Life", well I'm not sure...but it has changed my life and more than likely, saved me from a future I never want to imagine!
Thank you for this book
The book Body for Life for Women was great! Just good basic sense. I am 68 and have exercised all my life but still need shaping up! Also the section about "menopot", my daughter has said "Well don't think you can escape that". I told her she needs to read the book now.

Thank you for such a wonderful book.

Finally, the Whole Picture
I have read and tried pretty much everything on the market, and am thrilled to see that this diet regimen is not only flexible and realistic, but also "prescribed" in association with a sensible exercise regimen. AND, finally, Pamela Peeke helps find the right nutrition bar for those times when you're too busy having "real" food. Also, Dr. Peeke distinguishes raw vs. cooked vegetables in the diet plan, something many never even mention. The two things I was unclear about were how to "count" the nutrition bars in the overall diet regimen and why there are portion sizes for the vegetables when I can eat unlimited amounts ...? The copy-yourself-journal pages are a nice addition, although I have combined them all and created my own in Excel. The next Book? Maybe a fabulous Dr. Peeke Cookbook?
A real tool for attaining health and fitness for life
Body for Life for Women should be considered an essential guide for women's preventive heath. Because it is focused specifically on the unique health and fitness needs and problems encountered by women, it is much more valuable for women than general health or diet texts. While it promotes a plan of "12 weeks to a fabulous body"; to see it as a mere diet or fitness book sells short its real value. A diet book may help us (temporarily) lose a few pounds; this book aims to show us how to create a healthy body in which we can live independently throughout our lives. As a spokesperson on health, Dr. Peeke is the real thing. She is an expert on the most current understanding of nutrition, preventive health and women's issues. The book is well written, inspiring and accessible. It gives women, especially those of us over 40, real hope and guidance as we wonder why "what we have always done" to stay fit is not working any more. I found especially interesting the section on life milestones, which describes a woman's health priorities at each stage of life. The mind principles, which urge us to examine the attitudes that shape our behavior, are a wake-up call. Dr. Peeke is a big fan of the Nike slogan "Just Do It". In this book, she tells us exactly what it is that we must just do and provides the tools and motivation to keep doing it.
