Health Books about pregnancy

What is pregnancy?

Pregnancy is the carrying of one or more embryos or fetuses by female mammals, including humans, inside their bodies. In a pregnancy there can be multiple gestations (for example, in the case of twins, or triplets). Human pregnancy is the most studied of all mammalian pregnancies.

Human pregnancy lasts approximately 40 weeks between the time of the last menstrual cycle and birth (38 weeks from fertilisation). The medical term for a pregnant woman is "genetalian," just as the medical term for the unborn human is an embryo (early weeks) and then "foetus" (until birth). A woman who is pregnant for the first time is known as a primigravida or gravida 1: a woman who has never been pregnant is known as a gravida 0; similarly, the terms para 0, para 1 and so on are used for the number of times a woman has given birth.

In many societies' medical and legal definitions, human pregnancy is arbitrarily divided into three trimester periods, as a means to simplify reference to the different stages of fetal development. The first trimester period carries the highest risk of miscarriage (natural death of embryo or fetus), while during the second trimester the development of the fetus can start to be monitored and diagnosed. The third trimester marks the beginning of viability, which means the fetus can survive if an early natural or induced birth occurs. Because of the possible viability of developed fetus, cultural and legal definitions of life often consider a fetus in the third trimester to be a distinct living person.

What to Expect the First Year, Second Edition

Workman Publishing Company, 2003-10-16

Price: $15.95

Is our baby eating enough? Is this much crying normal? How do I know when she is really sick? This hefty, 671-page guide to your baby's first year is brought to you by the creators of the bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting. The three authors, all mothers themselves, are calm, clear, and encouraging as they tackle the first year of child-rearing, month by month. The easy-to-absorb, chronological format includes sections such as "What Your Baby May Be Doing," "What You Can Expect at This Month's Checkups," "Feeding Your Baby This Month," "What You May Be Concerned About," and "What It's Important to Know."

Part Two addresses special concerns such as illness, first aid do's and don'ts, the low-birthweight baby, the adopted baby, becoming a father, and sibling relationships. You'll also find discussions of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, selecting a physician for the baby, diapers and clothing, safety, and many ways of stimulating the baby's development. The recipes for babies and toddlers in Part Three are useful, as are the recommended home remedies; charts on common childhood illnesses; height and weight; and the thorough index. (A particular strength of the book is the authors' careful attention to diet and nutrition for both mother and baby, incorporating the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest recommendations on infant nutrition.) While some of the authors' perspectives are controversial (such as whether to let your baby "cry it out" or not), this book remains one of the most comprehensive resources for new parents as they toddle through their baby's first year.

Reviews:

Excellent Resource
This is a great reference book to have at hand for first time parents who are clueless about babies..such as myself. I used it a lot when my baby was between 1 to 6 months. Also, it has recipes for older babies ie those who are on solid food. I highly recommend it.
Easy to read when you need to know now!
When I was pregnant my husband and I found ourselves referring to the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" so much that we had to have "What to Expect the First Year." My friend bought it for us and we refer to it all the time. It is very easy to read, it's laid out so that parents can read each chapter quickly and the medical reference guide really helps! My daughter had a fever after her shots and we were able to find the info we needed quickly, while holding a crying 7 week-old.

This book is great and next year, I'll be reading "What to execpt the toddler years"!
my son's 3rd parent !!
A must for every 1st-time-mother. It throws light on what to expect developmentally, behaviorally and medically, and also what to expect from yourself !!
A worthy read
As others have mentioned, this book is easy to read, understand and find information. This series continues to be the only one that I refer to, lend out and buy for new moms.

Until reading the reviews, I never noticed or felt alarmed by a specific "tone" of writing. I read this book, feeling like my mom or grandma was giving me advice not only on what worked for them, but also general help that applies to everyone regardless of opinions.

I also have a large library of books, purchased during my first pregnancy. But this series is the only one that I refer back to.
Pages of widom
It is a great, big volume! The essential of this book is that it is written in simple terms and it is very down to earth. It is hard for me to imagine anyone getting through their baby's first year without this book in hand. It is informative, sensitive to the mother's, as well as the baby's needs, it is respectful of everyone involved with the child's care, it is kind, nonjudgmental, reassuring, and gives you every kind of guideline and consideration.

I have purchased many copies of this book as gifts for my friends. I recommend it to all future parents. Another great title is "Can We Live 150 Year" by Tombak. You will find there a lot of information about bringing up your child in a healthy manner. These two books make a great addition to a baby shower gift package.
