Health Books about pregnancy

What is pregnancy?

Pregnancy is the carrying of one or more embryos or fetuses by female mammals, including humans, inside their bodies. In a pregnancy there can be multiple gestations (for example, in the case of twins, or triplets). Human pregnancy is the most studied of all mammalian pregnancies.

Human pregnancy lasts approximately 40 weeks between the time of the last menstrual cycle and birth (38 weeks from fertilisation). The medical term for a pregnant woman is "genetalian," just as the medical term for the unborn human is an embryo (early weeks) and then "foetus" (until birth). A woman who is pregnant for the first time is known as a primigravida or gravida 1: a woman who has never been pregnant is known as a gravida 0; similarly, the terms para 0, para 1 and so on are used for the number of times a woman has given birth.

In many societies' medical and legal definitions, human pregnancy is arbitrarily divided into three trimester periods, as a means to simplify reference to the different stages of fetal development. The first trimester period carries the highest risk of miscarriage (natural death of embryo or fetus), while during the second trimester the development of the fetus can start to be monitored and diagnosed. The third trimester marks the beginning of viability, which means the fetus can survive if an early natural or induced birth occurs. Because of the possible viability of developed fetus, cultural and legal definitions of life often consider a fetus in the third trimester to be a distinct living person.

Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health (Revised Edition)

Toni Weschler

Collins, 2001-11-01

Price: $23.95

This comprehensive book explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control (which is not to be confused with the woefully ineffective "rhythm" method). Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realized that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle, and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a topnotch resource section. Recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen

Reviews:

Why didn't I know this sooner?
This book was a total eye-opener for me. I am 32 years old and never knew how much control I had over my own body. It was also refreshing to hear that some of the things I was experiencing (ie...longer than average cycles) were completely normal. I highly recommend this book to all women, whether you are trying to get pregnant or not. This would be an excellent book for a mother to teach her teenage daughter about her body. Toni Weschler uses an easy going approach and completely debunked many of the myths I grew up with.
Must Read!
I agree with all the other reviews. This book should be MUST reading for all women as soon as they start menstruating. Because of what this book taught me, I now have two beautiful daughters. I will have them both read this when the time comes.

Now, if we could only get ALL OB/GYNs to also read this and realize that sometimes natural is better than jumping to drugs, we'd all be better off. I just found a DR who didn't look at me funny when I said I use the Sympto-thermal method of birth control. Well, without it, I might still be trying to have my first baby.

Buy and read NOW even if you aren't planning a family!
Knowledge is powerful

Not only is this book fascinating and amazes you with the complexity of the female body, but it works. It is responsible for my daughter, her 2 cousins, my neighbor's kid, and 8 of her friend's kids. All of us were pregnant within 1-2 months of reading the book, most with months of unsuccessful trying. Even if it doesn't work for you- it gives you the tools to record powerful information to bring to a fertility specialist.
Necessary Reading If Your Doctor Is Taking A Slow Approach
This book was essential in helping me achieve pregnancy. It gave me a sense of control in a situation where I was feeling helpless and frustrated. The book was very easy to follow and had great suggestions and sample charts. The detailed charting suggested by the book helped me identify two very serious medical problems blocking my ability to get pregnant. When I presented my evidence and "proof" to my doctor, she admitted that she would never have discovered those problems because her plan was to take a "wait and see" approach for the first 12 months. Within 2 months of diagnosing and treating those disorders, I became pregnant. I highly recommend this book to every woman who is being told by her doctor that she is "healthy," but still isn't getting pregnant. It gives you back a sense of control.
Should be required reading in high school!
I really can't believe I didn't know this stuff 15 years ago!! I can honestly say that I didn't ever notice a pattern. And despite being nervous about the charting (for birth control at this point), it doesn't take any more time or effort that remembering to take a pill every day.

Take her views on doctors with a grain of salt. This is a terrific resource and belongs on every woman's bookshelf! I'm recommending it to everyone I know!
