What is diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a medical disorder characterized by varying or persistent hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar levels), especially after eating. All types of diabetes mellitus share similar symptoms and complications at advanced stages. Hyperglycemia itself can lead to dehydration and ketoacidosis. Longer-term complications include cardiovascular disease (doubled risk), chronic renal failure (it is the main cause for dialysis), retinal damage which can lead to blindness, nerve damage which can lead to erectile dysfunction (impotence), gangrene with risk of amputation of toes, feet, and even legs. The more serious complications are more common in people who have a difficult time controlling their blood sugars with medications (glycemic control).

The most important forms of diabetes are due to decreased or the complete absense of the production of insulin (diabetes mellitus type 1, the first recognized form), or decreased sensitivity of body tissues to insulin (diabetes mellitus type 2, the more common form). The former requires insulin injections, while the latter is generally managed with oral medication and only requires insulin if the tablets are ineffective.

Patient understanding and participation is vital as blood glucose levels change continuously. Treatments which return the blood sugar to normal levels can reduce or prevent development of some of the complications of diabetes. Other health problems that accelerate the damaging effects of diabetes are smoking, elevated cholesterol levels, obesity, high blood pressure, and lack of regular exercise.

Reviews:

An Informative Book
This book is especially useful for persons having diabetes. The author explains in his book how to reduce your sugar level and educates you how to overcome this disease what you should do in future. This is really very informative book to all. I recommend this book to everyone.

I also liked "The Power of Positive Habits"...it is sold out at Amazon but I found it for a discount at the Barnes & Noble website, or you can get it at "The Power of Positive Habits" website. ..the web address is the same as the book title and they are giving away over $1,000 in free e-books today
The Best I've Found, By Far
Far too often, books on diabetes offer irresponsible oversimplifications and quick one-size-fits-all fixes. Becker explains the biological underpinnnings of the disease very clearly, and walks the reader through the current best thinking about diabetes management -- which means that she acknowledges the deep divisions among doctors, and the idiosyncratic ways that different bodies respond to treatment. She doesn't pretend that any single school of treatment has answers for all people.

But she also knows how easy it is for people who've just been diagnosed to become overwhelmed by information- hence the structure of her book, which continually reminds the reader that common sense, presence of mind, and the development of the right daily habits are among the most important tools available for managing the disease.

Thanks, Gretchen!
Help!
This book helped tremendously in answering the many questions we had after the diagnosis. It is still our reference manual whenever a question arises. I reccomend this book to anyone with diabetes, especially those who are newly diagnosed.
This book took away the anxiety of a diabetes diagnosis
Gretchen Becker has written a clear, engaging and exhaustively researched investigation of Type II diabetes, its causes and effects. After reading it for the first time I was tremendously encouraged and inspired to take action to deal with my Type 2 Diabetes. I continue to refer to the book when I have questions. It's written for readers who are smart and curious but don't necessarily have a lot of scientific knowledge. Becker won't insult your intelligence, and she doesn't preach. She doesn't mince words about how serious diabetes really is. It's a good resource for those of us who want to know the whys and wherefores. I certainly got more positive suggestions from this book than I did from all my doctors' appointments combined.
Louis (Chicago)
This book scared me to death. Described how I had to measure my blood sugar with a kit. I was under the assumption that Type 2 diabetes could be controlled with pills. Other books confirmed this, and it is working for me. I also didn't appreciate, the arrogant, over-the-top writing style of the author. The American Diabetes Association Complete Guide to Diabetes is much better written and more informative.
