What is diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a medical disorder characterized by varying or persistent hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar levels), especially after eating. All types of diabetes mellitus share similar symptoms and complications at advanced stages. Hyperglycemia itself can lead to dehydration and ketoacidosis. Longer-term complications include cardiovascular disease (doubled risk), chronic renal failure (it is the main cause for dialysis), retinal damage which can lead to blindness, nerve damage which can lead to erectile dysfunction (impotence), gangrene with risk of amputation of toes, feet, and even legs. The more serious complications are more common in people who have a difficult time controlling their blood sugars with medications (glycemic control).

The most important forms of diabetes are due to decreased or the complete absense of the production of insulin (diabetes mellitus type 1, the first recognized form), or decreased sensitivity of body tissues to insulin (diabetes mellitus type 2, the more common form). The former requires insulin injections, while the latter is generally managed with oral medication and only requires insulin if the tablets are ineffective.

Patient understanding and participation is vital as blood glucose levels change continuously. Treatments which return the blood sugar to normal levels can reduce or prevent development of some of the complications of diabetes. Other health problems that accelerate the damaging effects of diabetes are smoking, elevated cholesterol levels, obesity, high blood pressure, and lack of regular exercise.

Fact or fiction
As a diabetic I found the information interesting. The author was patting himself on his back abit to often. I had a hard time understanding his examples. It was like useing the word your defining as an example. Over all the book contained pertenant information. The book also offered good advice and warnings about the drugs and the food we eat.
Reversing Diabetes (book)
Excellent. Even though I chose a used book, it was in very good shape, and was promptly delivered. On the other hand this book is being a treasure to me. Very useful.
Thank you.
More Sales than research
This book seems be based on research done by other doctors who do not own a supplement company.
The advice is very good, although copied, but the supplement advice is to be taken with a grain of salt, (figure of speech)
The supplements sold by Dr. Whitaker's company are much higher priced than the exact same supplements sold by other reuptable supplement comapanies like Puritan's Pride, The viatamin Shoppe, Swansons vitamins etc.
I prefer other books on this subject sold by amazon, and written by reputable doctors doing research for heart clinics rather than a book written by a doctor who runs a commercial research instutite which is also a supplement company.

GOOD GRIEF!!!!!
I know the medical association and the dietary associations follow suit, but advocating a "low-fat, high fiber, hi carb" diet is EXACTLY why we have sky-rocketing Diabetes.
If you really want to find out how to deal with Diabetes, head to the book by a man that is NOW a Dr, with type 1, yes TYPE ONE diabetes, and he keeps it under control, and not this Charlatan that is supported by all our "experts" that ignore WHAT diabetes IS.
Try Dr. Bernstein instead.
He will talk reality to you.
Reversed My Diabetes
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in December 2003 with a fasting blood glucose of 220. By following much of the advice in this book, my fasting blood glucose now averages around 80. In April 2004, my lab results showed a fasting blood glucose of 82 and a glycated hemoglobin of 5.8 percent. Exercise is very important. I lift weights and walk on a treadmill. I generally eat a low glycemic diet, and I take lots of supplements. The most important supplements for me are alpha lipoic acid, vanadyl sulfate, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, magnesium citrate, gymnema sylvestre, and the Chromate form of chromium. I recommend this book to everyone who has Type 2 diabetes.
